Why AppLovin changed the name back, and why ecommerce sellers should care
Understand the difference between AppLovin Ads, Axon, and MAX, then see why the newly open platform is becoming an important incremental channel for ecommerce sellers.

A CEO publicly admits a naming mistake. That does not happen often.
In June 2026, AppLovin CEO Adam Foroughi published a blog post announcing that the advertising platform was changing its name from Axon back to AppLovin Ads.
It is unusual to see an advertising CEO personally explain why the company is changing a product name.
His reasoning was refreshingly direct:
After the platform was renamed Axon, customers kept calling it AppLovin and new users still searched for AppLovin. If the name already works, there is no reason to change it.
That small decision reveals something important: the naming confusion around this company is real.
AppLovin, AppLovin Ads, Axon, and MAX are frequently used as if they mean the same thing. Of those four names, only one is the product that ecommerce sellers actually need to use.
Let us separate them one by one.
AppLovin Ads: where advertisers open an account and launch campaigns
This is the only product an advertiser needs to register for and sign in to.
AppLovin was founded in 2012 and grew out of mobile game advertising. It once published games as well, but sold that business in 2025 to become a focused advertising technology company. AppLovin Ads is now its platform for advertisers.
Its ad experience combines video, a post-video Interactive Page, and Dynamic Catalog. For a closer look at why that second screen is more than decoration, read What Is an AppLovin Interactive Page?.
Three things about the platform matter much more than its name:
1. It is now fully open
- Before 2025, advertisers needed a relationship with AppLovin's team.
- In October 2025, the company launched a self-serve platform, but access required a referral code from an existing user.
- In late June 2026, AppLovin announced that registration was open to everyone.
⚠️ One caution: as of July 2026, AppLovin's risk controls were still relatively strict. Sellers who want a stable account and a smoother campaign launch may still benefit from working through an agency. We return to this point below.
2. Every buying option is performance based
The platform offers three ways to buy:
- Set a ROAS target and let the system optimize toward it.
- Buy purchases at a target cost per purchaser.
- Buy leads at a target cost per lead.
AppLovin states it plainly: "We don't do brand marketing."
For sellers, that is less a limitation than a simplification. Every dollar is aimed at a measurable result, rather than impressions for their own sake.
3. Its inventory comes from mobile games and reaches more than one billion players every day
Many sellers have the same first reaction: do people playing mobile games actually buy products from ecommerce brands?
Our aggregated Fintouch data suggests a striking answer: AppLovin has already become the second-largest identifiable advertising traffic source for ecommerce sellers. It happened quickly and, for many sellers, almost unnoticed during 2026.
The traffic quality has also been better than many expected. Average order value has often exceeded Google and landed close to Facebook.
Axon: the engine behind the platform
Axon is not a product that advertisers can register for. It is the recommendation engine that powers AppLovin Ads.
Once an advertiser sets a goal and budget, Axon calculates who should see an ad, how much to bid, and when the impression should appear.
This is where the naming confusion began:
- When the self-serve platform launched in October 2025, AppLovin named the entire platform Axon.
- The market did not adopt the new name, and customers kept calling it AppLovin.
- Eight months later, the company changed the platform name back to AppLovin Ads, while Axon returned to being the name of the underlying engine.
The term "Axon Ads" is still everywhere online, but AppLovin no longer uses it officially. When someone markets themselves as an "Axon media buyer," the name alone may tell you which version of the platform they learned.
For advertisers, there is one thing about Axon that is worth understanding:
It does not depend on IDFA.
When Apple tightened its privacy rules, platforms built around user-level identity tracking, with Meta as the clearest example, were affected. Axon takes a different route. It uses app context, behavioral patterns across its network, and probabilistic models to estimate who is likely to buy. That is one reason some sellers report that its iOS performance has been steadier than expected.
So are "advertising on Axon" and "advertising on AppLovin Ads" the same thing?
Yes. The first is a technical shorthand; the second is the product name.
MAX: the other half of the business, and mostly irrelevant to sellers
MAX is a monetization platform for app developers.
Developers integrate MAX into their apps, where advertising inventory enters a real-time auction and is sold to the highest bidder. Ads purchased through AppLovin Ads are ultimately shown across the hundreds of thousands of apps in the MAX ecosystem.
The structure is simple:
Advertisers spend through AppLovin Ads. Developers earn through MAX. They are the two sides of the same transaction.
We have met many sellers who searched for "how to open an AppLovin account" and ended up reading MAX integration tutorials. After an afternoon with the SDK documentation, they realized it was written for developers.
This is a common trap, so here is the shortcut: if you do not own an app, you do not need MAX. You do not even need to study it.
Should ecommerce sellers care?
Absolutely. From 2026 to 2027, AppLovin may be the channel worth watching most closely after Facebook and Google.
The platform is evolving from a game advertising platform into an ecommerce advertising platform.
AppLovin has disclosed an important figure. From October 2025 through June 2026, during the eight months when access still required a referral code, annualized ecommerce web advertising revenue reached the billion-dollar level.
Reaching that scale while the door was still partly closed suggests that demand had been building. Now that access is open, a new wave of ecommerce advertisers is entering the platform.
Fintouch has served more than 10,000 ecommerce sellers as a growth product. We began paying close attention to AppLovin because its traffic expanded sharply across our aggregate data. We also covered the channel in our earlier review, July 2026 Ecommerce Seller Ad Review: Traffic, Add-to-Cart Rate, and Average Order Value.
Sellers interested in AppLovin advertising are welcome to talk with us. ECLICKTECH (易点天下) is currently one of AppLovin's key account-opening agencies in China, and Fintouch is working closely with both ECLICKTECH and AppLovin.
The questions we hear most often
Q1: Do I still need an invitation code?
Not at the moment. However, domestic Chinese sellers may still need agency support to navigate AppLovin's risk controls. We recommend opening an account through ECLICKTECH, or contacting us for an introduction to its team.
Q2: Are Axon Ads and AppLovin Ads the same thing?
Yes. Axon was the platform's official name from October 2025 to June 2026, but that name has been retired. Axon now refers only to the AI engine.
Q3: Is it just another ad network?
No. We recently discussed this point with AppLovin's official partners. AppLovin is built around high-quality mobile gaming inventory, which works very differently from a long-tail DSP network. The key point is that AppLovin can operate at Facebook-like scale as a brand-discovery channel that brings in large numbers of new customers. Many sellers have not recognized that yet, which is exactly why the opportunity exists.
Q4: Can I advertise if I do not have an app?
Yes. Web ecommerce is now a core customer segment that AppLovin serves openly. If you have a website that can take payments, you can advertise.
